The older I get, the more I realize so dam lucky I am to be surrounded by so many incredible people. A few of these special people joined me in the Midlands for my idea of a perfect weekend, celebrating my birthday. Almost a whole year before my 30th birthday, I had imagined up how this weekend would play out. The reality was better than I imagined. Starting off with the food… the master of cakes, Roxi Wardman, went all out with all of my favorite things to create the perfect birthday cake. It was a typical crisp winter Midlands weekend. Friday night we put out a mezza style spread of cheeses, homemade hummus, olives and pita breads.
The following day my darling husband got straight to nursing the perfect Oxtail potjie that slowly brewed for pretty much most of the day. While he was attending to our dinner, a few of us took naps on the grass or curls up with a book and took it easy. Later in the afternoon some of the adventurous friends went out in search of a hiking trail. We strolled through the wilderness, crossing paths with a herd of Zebra and making our way down to a waterfall… where Jo almost took me out and we both almost ended up in the water!
Back at Hillhouse later that evening with full bellies and happy hearts, we spent the rest of the night playing board games and a particularly aggressive round of Heads Up. I still don’t know how Farran managed to sleep soundly through the hysterical screams of boys vs girls. At one point I insisted on star gazing and we were curled up under blankets and squealed with excitement as shooting starts flew above us.
Sunday morning, a few of us meandered down to The Farmers Daughter in Howick for a quick breakfast stop before heading back to Durban. It was a perfect weekend in my book and I will always cherish these memories!
Thank you to everyone that was apart of it. I love you all!
