WHAT I DO Aside from coaching freedivers at all levels and from all backgrounds, I lead the freediving arm of the Durban Undersea Club (DUC). I am currently serving as Secretary for AIDA SA, who were granted observer status in March 2024 with AIDA International.
MY BACKSTORY As for some background, I completed my PADI Open Water SCUBA certification in 2009 and have been actively diving since then (mostly Aliwal Shoal!) as a PADI Advanced diver. I naturally transitioned to freediving after being exposed to its discipline during a shark snorkel. It not only offered a completely new perspective on ocean exploration & marine wildlife encounters, but opened the door to a range of meditative benefits. This inspired me to complete my Level 2 Molchanovs freediving certification in October 2022, and my Level 3 and Instructor qualification in February 2024 simultaneously.
WHY FREEDIVING? Freediving is so much more than just a recreational sport. The mental and physical benefits are endless and there is ongoing research into its therapeutic effects on the mind and body. Aside from allowing us the opportunity to connect with nature on a deeper level, freediving teaches us transferable skills that we can use to manage the stresses of everyday life – on land as well as underwater. It instills inner confidence, patience, resilience, and the courage to step beyond what we ever thought was possible. Inspired by Dr Syliva Earle – I also believe that the domino affect of sharing the ocean with as many people as possible will encourage each person to view the underwater world as a sanctuary to protect. In her words: “We can’t protect what we don’t know, and we can’t know what we don’t understand.” Creating a safe space to allow students to look beneath the surface is the first step to discovering that understanding.
I look forward to sharing my passion for freediving and the ocean with you! If you’re interested in working with me or collaborating on an upcoming project, let’s connect!
