The Hurricane Squad was started by Wilma van Niekerk and John McCarthy: former provincial, national and professional level competitive surfer, who initially embarked on some of the freedive training exercises to increase comfort in the bigger waves and relentless surf conditions associated with cyclone season swells.
The training sessions were so fierce, that coach Wilma was dubbed Hurricane Wilma, after the most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Atlantic basin in 2005… and so Hurricane Squad was born.
After leaving our shores for work opportunities abroad, the squad was left in the hands of Angie van der Hoogen. Angie’s coaching style is a little more playful with some elevated heart rate sets in between.
